Cutters hold on for sweep

August 14, 2005 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
New Haven County Cutters News Release

After outscoring the Elmira Pioneers 23-5 in the two previous games, fans might have expected the New Haven County Cutters to roll right over the visiting team for the third straight game on Sunday afternoon. What transpired at Yale Field was anything but a blowout, as the Cutters narrowly escaped with a 2-1 victory, giving the boys in baby blue a three game sweep.

The starting pitching for both clubs was outstanding. Courtney Hall for the Cutters and Elmira's Rolando Viera both pitched well enough for the win, but it was the home team?s tall righty who would come out victorious. He tossed seven and one third innings, scattering seven hits, striking out five and allowing just one run, running his season record to 5-3.

After two abysmal starting pitching performances to start the series, the Pioneers finally got a performance that gave them a chance to win. Viera finished with a complete game and did not surrender an earned run, although the two runs scored were a result of his throwing error in the bottom of the fourth. It was his first loss of the season.

Second baseman Mike LaRosa drove in both runs for the Cutters, with a two out double in the home half of the fourth. Down 0-2 in the count, he battled back to even things at two before driving a double right inside the third base line, scoring Bill Peavey and Jeff Brooks. The double came after the inning was extended on Viera's error.

The Cutters were made to sweat out the victory, though. Up 2-1 in the top of the ninth, Mark Comolli came in to close out the game, but ran into some trouble along the way. He was welcomed by Jabe Bergeron, who promptly rapped a double down the left field line, followed by a Samone Peters single through the right side of the infield. Pioneers Manager Greg Keagle decided to hold Ryan Dorsey, who pinch ran for Bergeron, at third. It was a decision that he will undoubtedly be ruing for the next few days as Comolli was able to get Das Jesson to pop up weakly to Peavey and get the game ending 5-4-3 double play off the bat of Jobu Morita.

It is the second time this season that the Cutters have swept Elmira at Yale Field, giving them a perfect 6-0 home mark against the Pioneers.

The first place Cutters play host to the North Shore Spirit on Tuesday at 7:05.
