New Haven County Cutters News Release

The New Haven County Cutters smacked a season-high 16 hits against the Quebec Les Capitales on Saturday night on route to a 9-7 victory. It was the second win in as many nights for the Cutters.

Third baseman Jeff Brooks led the way for the Cutters, going 4 for 5 with 3 RBIs and a run scored. But he wasn't the only New Haven County player who produced at the plate. Leadoff man Keto Anderson did his job at the top of the lineup reaching base three times, two by way of singles, one compliments of a free pass. The Cutters' Mr. Everything, Vinny Esposito, who split time in left and rightfield during the game, went 3 for 4 with 3 runs scored and a RBI.

Even with all the hits, the Cutters were made to sweat out the final innings. Closer Nick Maness worked himself into a jam in the top of the ninth, loading the bases with two outs and the tying run on second. Les Capitales' designated hitter Bill Greenwell looped a shallow fly ball into right-center field that might have initially worried some fans but the hard-charging Esposito came in to grab it with ease. The final out was overshadowed by a jaw-dropping catch by Esposito to record the first out of the ninth.

Oliver Lepine lead-off with what looked to be a surefire single and possibly extra-bases but was denied when Esposito reached across his body at full extension and made a diving catch inches before the ball struck the Yale Field turf.

Starting pitcher Jordy Alexander looked sharp going six innings giving up four hits, all of which were in the third inning, leading to the only three runs he allowed.

The lead could have been higher if not for an unassisted double play turned by first baseman Bill Peavey to close out the third. After corralling a sharply hit line drive off the bat of Geoffrey Tomlinson, Peavey raced back to first and got there with time to spare to double-up Lepine.

The Cutters tied the score in the bottom of the fourth and then took the lead in the fifth, adding to it considerably in the sixth. Timely two-out hitting was the key for New Haven County throughout the game, none more evident than in the sixth.

After two quick outs, Anderson started a chain of five consecutive batters reaching base, with Peavey and Brooks provided the fireworks. Peavey laced a line drive deep to right field that scored Anderson and Esposito and moved Mike O'Keefe over to third. Brooks cleared the bases with a clutch single.

Sunday marks the final game of the Cutters' opening seven-game homestand. Rolando Valles makes his second start for the Cutters, while Darwin Marrero takes the hill for Quebec.
