Curve Rally Falls Short in Sunday Loss

April 21, 2024 - Eastern League (EL)
Altoona Curve News Release

BOWIE, Md. - Matt Fraizer and Aaron Shackelford each hit home runs in the ninth inning on Sunday afternoon for the Curve, but a three-run home run by Dylan Beavers was too much to overcome as Bowie defeated Altoona for the fifth time in the series, 5-3, at Prince George's Stadium.

Beavers came to the plate with the game tied 2-2 in the seventh inning and drove the fifth pitch of his at-bat against Po-Yu Chen over the wall to give Bowie the lead. Chen entered in relief to begin the fifth inning and tossed 2.1 frames, allowing the three runs off the Beavers home run on five hits with a walk and a strikeout.

Altoona began to rally in the ninth inning with a lead-off home run from Fraizer off new reliever Keegan Gillies. It was Fraizer's second home run of the season, both coming this week against the Baysox. Two batters later, Shackelford hit his third home run of the season to bring the game within a run. After Jase Bowen lined a single off Gillies leg, Bowie went to left-hander Ryan Hennen, who stranded the game-tying run at third base with two flyouts to end the game and earn the save.

Anthony Solometo started the game for Altoona and was pulled with two outs in the third inning. After working a scoreless first two frames, Solometo allowed a one-out single and walked three batters to allow a run to score before Valentin Linarez entered in relief. Linarez allowed one inherited runner to score on another bases-loaded walk, tossing 1.1 innings with two strikeouts and no runs on his line. Solometo struck out three in the start.

The Curve scored two runs off reliever Nick Richmond in the seventh inning, with Bowen reaching on an infield single that scored Joe Perez and Jackson Glenn. Perez and Bowen each had two hits in the loss.

Altoona returns home on Tuesday night at 6:00 p.m. to begin a six-game series with the Akron RubberDucks, Double-A affiliate of the Cleveland Guardians. Starters for the contest are yet to be announced.
