State College Spikes News Release
STATE COLLEGE - Curve Baseball LP, which operates the brand-new State College Spikes Baseball Club, today announced it has completed its purchase and relocation of the former New Jersey Cardinals, following receipt of final approval from the New York-Penn League, Minor League Baseball and the Baseball Office of the Commissioner.
In October, Curve Baseball LP President & Managing Partner Chuck Greenberg announced that his ownership group had entered into an agreement to purchase the Augusta, NJ franchise with the intent of moving the St. Louis Cardinals' short-season Class-A affiliate to State College for the 2006 New York-Penn League season. The requisite baseball approval process was completed today.
"The entire process moved along as we anticipated and we are thrilled to have completed the acquisition and relocation," said Greenberg. "Our entire organization has been working very hard to create the same level of fun, affordable family entertainment for Spikes fans that our Curve fans have enjoyed over the past seven seasons."
"We are excited to welcome the Spikes to the New York-Penn League," said New York-Penn League President Ben Hayes. "The Curve Baseball LP ownership group has established a sterling reputation throughout Minor League Baseball thanks to the success of the Altoona franchise and we look forward working with them to be just as successful with the Spikes. Adding a market with the passion for sports that State College has, as well as bringing in a state-of-the-art facility like Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, is a great benefit for the league."
With the ownership and relocation process completed, the Spikes also today announced the club's inaugural season schedule, which will begin on Tuesday, June 20th against the rival Williamsport Crosscutters (Pittsburgh Pirates) at Medlar Field. Overall, the Spikes will play a total of 76 regular season games, of which 38 will be at home.
Standard home game times will be Monday-Saturday at 7:05 PM, while Sunday contests will begin at 6:05 PM. There are three exceptions to the standard start times on the home schedule, including a special Noon start on the Fourth of July against the Jamestown Jammers (Florida Marlins). The Spikes will also play Noon games on Wednesday, July 12th against the Tri-City Valley Cats (Houston Astros) and Friday, September 1st against the Batavia Muckdogs (Philadelphia Phillies). The July 12th game will serve as part of the festivities surrounding the Eastern League All-Star Game, hosted by the Spikes sister franchise, the Altoona Curve.
The overall schedule, which consists of 76 games in 80 days, will see the Spikes take on fellow Pinckney Division rivals the Auburn Doubledays (Toronto Blue Jays), Mahoning Valley Scrappers (Cleveland Indians), Batavia and Jamestown 10 times each and intra-state rival Williamsport 12 times. The schedule rounds out with three games against the remaining eight NYPL teams with the Staten Island Yankees (New York Yankees), Hudson Valley Renegades (Tampa Bay Devil Rays), Vermont Lake Monsters (Washington Nationals) and Tri-City visiting State College. The Spikes will take on the Lowell Spinners (Boston Red Sox), Oneonta Tigers (Detroit Tigers), Brooklyn Cyclones (New York Mets) and Aberdeen Iron Birds (Baltimore Orioles) on the road in 2006.
"We're excited to release our inaugural season schedule so that the great baseball fans of Centre County and Central Pennsylvania can begin to make plans to join us for our 38 home games, starting on June 20th against Williamsport," said Spikes General Manager Rick Janac. "Playing the first game in franchise history in front of our own fans is something our organization is very much looking forward to and all of our efforts are going into making that night, as well as each of the other 37 home games, a special experience."
Individual game tickets and group outings for the Spikes inaugural season will go on sale to the public in the coming weeks, but 2006 Season Tickets and multi-year luxury suites are on sale now and can be purchased by calling (814) 272-1711, or in person by visiting the club's temporary office location at 204 East Calder Way, Suite 210 in downtown State College.
