DENVER - The National Lacrosse League announced today that Colorado Mammoth transition player Joey Cupido has been named to the league's All-Rookie Team. The 22-year-old Hamilton, Ontario native was a contributor on both ends of the floor.
"Joey's very athletic," said Mammoth head coach Bob Hamley. "As the year went along, he just kept getting better and better in understanding the game. With his skill-set, it bodes well for the future for him. Joey was fun to watch!"
His 101 loose balls were tops on the team, and the sixth-most in the NLL among non-face-off men. Cupido also led the Mammoth with 20 forced turnovers, tied for tenth-best in the league. He scored six goals and added nine assists in 15 games played, and didn't commit a penalty in the process.
A fifth-round selection in the 2011 NLL Entry Draft, Cupido recorded points in six of the final seven regular-season games and had eight points in the last four. In the NLL, It's rare for a player drafted outside the first round to be named to the All-Rookie Team. Cupido becomes the first player in a decade to receive the league recognition after being selected in the fifth round or later.
"Every draft you go into, you're looking for a steal in the late rounds," said Mammoth president & general manager Steve Govett. "Sometimes it comes down to luck; sometimes it comes down to effort and scouting. I think our guys do a tremendous job of making sure that we are scouring every possible opportunity to get great players. They found a player in the fifth round who was able to step in and play - we couldn't be happier!"
Buffalo's Dhane Smith, Calgary's Joe Resetarits, Edmonton's Curtis Knight and Mark Matthews, and Minnesota's Shayne Jackson and Kiel Matisz were also named to the All-Rookie Team. All were first-round draft picks.
Cupido joins Brian Langtry (2003), Dan Carey (2006), Nenad Gajic and Jamie Shewchuk (2007), and Adam Jones (2012) as Mammoth players to earn the league accolade.
