Knighthawks' Champion's Cup News & Notes

May 6, 2013 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Rochester Knighthawks News Release

With a 12-10 victory over the Minnesota Swarm on May 4th, the Rochester Knighthawks captured their second consecutive East Division title and will have the opportunity to become the first team to win back-to-back Champion's Cups in a decade.

The Knighthawks will take on the Washington Stealth on Saturday, May 11th at 7:00 p.m. at the Langley Events Centre in Langley, B.C.

Rochester tied Buffalo and Toronto for second in championship appearances with their eighth trip to the title game in franchise history, one shy of Philadelphia's all-time record. The last time Rochester advanced to consecutive championship games was in 1999 and 2000. They lost both title games to the Rock.

Veteran forward Mike Accursi is on the verge of winning his fourth Champion's Cup in his 16-year career and his second pair of back-to-back championships. He won the 2007 title with Rochester and 2008 Cup with Buffalo.

Dan Dawson is one win away from claiming the first championship of his 12-year career. He has played 187 regular season games without hoisting the Champion's Cup. The 6-5 forward has made it to the finals three times in his career. In 17 career postseason games, Dawson has scored 113 points (44+69), the fourth-most in league history. He needs four assists to surpass Colin Doyle for second all-time in playoff assists.

Defenseman Scott Self is also seeking his first championship ring. He has played 189 regular season games over his 13 seasons with eight different teams without winning a Champion's Cup. He played alongside Dawson in the 2005 and 2007 championship attempts with the Arizona Sting.

Although the Knighthawks will be the visiting team, for Joel McCready, it will feel like a home game. McCready has played for the Senior "A" Langley Thunder of Western Lacrosse Association since 2010. He currently works as a firefighter in nearby Burnaby, B.C., which is less than an hour's drive from Langley.

Matt Vinc is looking to become the first netminder to win both the Goaltender of the Year Award and the Champion's Cup in the same season. No goalie has claimed both accolades since Goaltender of the Year was first awarded in 2002.

The 2013 National Lacrosse League championship will be aired live exclusively on the CBS Sports Network. The Knighthawks are 4-0 in games that have been featured on the CBS Sports Network in 2013.
