Daytona Tortugas News Release

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla-The St. Lucie Mets sure know how to spoil a good party in Daytona.

Just one night after the Cubs pulled off a three-game series sweep of the Eastern Division powerhouse Vero Beach Dodgers, the Mets announced their presence with authority at Jackie Robinson Ballpark on Friday evening as they snapped the Cubs winning streak en route to a Game 1 blowout victory by a final of 11-3.

Cubs starter Chris Shaver (2-2) gave up six runs (three earned) in 5.2 innings of work and was charged with his second straight loss for Daytona.

The Mets set the tone early as left fielder Dante Brinkley and catcher Andy Wilson slugged back-to-back homeruns in the third inning to give St. Lucie a 3-1 lead.

Daytona then answered back briefly in the bottom half of the frame, as third baseman Scott Moore poked his 20th homerun of the season off of Mets starter Chuck Smith (4-4) to draw the Cubs to within one run at 3-2.

But St. Lucie pulled away after that, as they added three more runs in the sixth and exploded for a five run effort in the ninth, cruising to the eight-run victory and putting a damper on an exciting home stand for the Daytona fans.

Cubs left fielder Paul O'Toole led the way offensively for Daytona, as he went 2-for-4 with a single and a double in the losing effort.

With the loss Daytona had their four-game winning streak snapped as they dropped to 25-28, while the Mets improved to 29-25 with the win.

The two teams will meet back at "the Jack" for Game 2 on Saturday evening, as the Cubs send lefty Yorkin Ferreras (2-3, 5.57 ERA) to face Mets righty Tim Worthington (3-1, 2.43 ERA).

First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. EST.
