Daytona Tortugas News Release
DAYTONA - The Daytona Cubs (25-31) offense continued their hot hitting, as they returned home with a bang and outslugged the Lakeland Flying Tigers (22-32) on route to a 6-4 victory.
Daytona got on the board via the long ball in the bottom of the third inning. Second baseman Nathan Samson got it going with a solo shot to left field off Flying Tigers starter L.J. Gagnier (9-10). Third baseman Josh Vitters followed suit with a solo shot to left of his own to put the Cubs in front 2-0. It is the second time Daytona has gone back-to-back this season. Robinson Chirinos and Jovan Rosa did it on June 11th against Fort Myers.
The Cubs added one more in the third inning as Marwin Gonzalez tripled to the gap in right-center before Jake Opitz brought him home with his second double of the game.
Lakeland answered back with two runs in the top of the fourth inning. Shortstop Audy Ciriaco and right fielder Jordan Cruz led off the frame with back-to-back singles. First baseman Devin Thomas brought both of them in with a double to the power alley in right-centerfield.
Gonzalez came through in the bottom of the fifth inning to extend the Cubs lead to 4-2. Center fielder Brandon Guyer got aboard on a bunt single and advanced into scoring position on a throwing error by third baseman Joe Tucker. Gonzalez then ripped a Gagnier offering over the head of left fielder Josh Workman for a run-scoring double.
Cubs starter Craig Muschko (6-2) had his best stuff going on Tuesday evening. The Pennsylvania native tallied a career high eight strikeouts over five innings. His previous career high was five. Muschko allowed just two runs on four hits and did not walk a single batter.
Lakeland cut into the Cubs lead in the sixth against Cubs reliever Chris Siegfried. Thomas hit his second double of the game with one away in the inning. Jeramy Laster followed up with a double of his own that scored Thomas, but then was thrown out at third as Laster tried to stretch it into a triple.
The Cubs responded to the Flying Tigers, and then some in the bottom half of the sixth. Luis Flores led off the inning with a walk issued by Flying Tigers reliever Matt Hoffman, and eventually reached third after groundouts by Jonathan Wyatt and Jericho Jones. With two away Tony Campana singled past a diving Ciriaco and drove home Flores. After a walk to Samson, Vitters singled home Campana and gave the Cubs a 6-3 lead.
The Flying Tigers cut the deficit to two after they scored a run in the eighth against Cubs pitcher Dan McDaniel. McDaniel walked Thomas to start the inning. With two away, McDaniel walked Joe Tucker and then gave up a single to Hernan Perez that allowed Thomas to score.
Luke Sommer picked up his second save of the year as he closed the door on the Flying Tigers in the ninth.
The Cubs will continue their series against the Flying Tigers Wednesday, August 26 with the first pitch at 7:05 p.m. Gates will open at 6:00p.m. The Cubs will be having their final Halifax Health Wednesday as fans will be able to enjoy ice cream treats for just one dollar.
