Metairie, LA -- Phil Hiatt scored on a single from Nic Jackson in the seventh to break a 1-1 tie as the Iowa Cubs (23-32) held on to defeat the New Orleans Zephyrs (32-24) 2 to 1 on Saturday Night in front of 5,263 at Zephyr Field.

The Cubs scored first as David Kelton led off the fourth inning for Iowa with a double off Zephyrs starter Ron Villone. Kelton advanced to third on a single by Hiatt and scored on a fly out by Donny Leon. New Orleans tied the game with a run in the fifth as Eric Bruntlett singled with two outs off Cubs starter Steve Smyth. After walks to David Matranga and Henri Stanley loaded the bases, Bruntlett scored on a wild pitch from Smyth.

The game stayed that way until the seventh as Hiatt led off the inning with a double off Villone. He advanced to third on a ground out from Leon and then scored on the single from Jackson. The Zephyrs rallied in the ninth as Raul Chavez led off with a single off Cubs reliever Kane Davis. After pinch hitter Jason Alfaro sacrificed Chavez to second, Phil Norton relieved Davis. Kyle Logan then drilled the 1-0 offering from Norton to right but Trenidad Hubbard made a running catch at the wall for the second out of the inning. Jason Karnuth then relieved Norton and walked Tripp Cromer on four pitches. Karnuth then struck out Eric Bruntlett to record his first save of the season.

Smyth (3-3) pitched six innings allowing one run on five hits to pick up the win. Villone (2-2) suffered the loss tossing 6 1/3 innings allowing two runs on six hits.

The series with the Cubs continues on Sunday at 5:05 p.m.. Sunday is Hibernia Kids Day with the first 1,000 Kids 12 and under with paid admission receiving kids Replica T-Shirt Jersey.. Jared Fernandez (5-4, 5.05) is scheduled to start for the Zephyrs and Matt Bruback (3-6, 5.14) for the Cubs.
