Daytona Tortugas News Release

Daytona Beach - With better than 2,200 fans on hand for the final home game of 2009, the Daytona Cubs (27-35, 61-68) fell by a 4-1 score to the Clearwater Threshers (33-31, 65-65). The Threshers took the series with three wins in four games.

Clearwater did not waste time getting after Cubs starter Craig Muschko (6-3) in the first inning. Javis Diaz started with a triple down the right field line, which was followed by a Jesus Villegas RBI-double down the left field line. Villegas found home plate on a double play turned two batters later.

In the third inning, Gus Milner got things started for the Threshers with a single up the middle. A walk and sac bunt later, and Fidel Hernandez brought him in with a single.

Daytona got their lone run in the fourth. With two outs, Brandon Guyer roped a double to left. Hot-hitting Jake Opitz took advantage and drove him in. Opitz finished the series going 8-for-14 with three RBI and extended his hitting streak to eight games.

Clearwater tacked on an insurance run in the fifth. Diaz notched his second three-bagger of the game and later scored on a Villegas sac fly.

Brandon Guyer tried to ignite a late, ninth-inning rally for the Cubs. After Josh Vitters grounded out to start the frame, the Cubs designated hitter pounded a Carlos Monasterios offering deep over the left field wall to pull Daytona within a pair. Two batters later, Mark Reed ripped a two-out double to bring the tying run to the plate, however, Marwin Gonzalez would go down swinging to end the game.

Daytona will get Monday off before hitting the road to wrap up the 2009 season at Lakeland and Clearwater. Lefty James Leverton will get the starting call in game one against the Flying Tigers on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and all the action can be heard on AM1340 WROD and online at www.daytonacubs.com beginning at 6:40 p.m.
