Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release
BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Nick Ames hit a 415-foot home run to the deepest part of MCU Park and Reece Hampton reached base four times but the Connecticut Tigers (23-25) lost 13-6 to the Brooklyn Cyclones (27-25) on Wednesday night at Coney Island.
The Cyclones took a 13-0 lead into the fifth inning thanks to five runs in the third and seven more in the fourth after ten batters went to the plate in each inning. All nine Brooklyn starters recorded a base hit and catcher Hayden Senger led Brooklyn with four runs batted in.
Cyclones shortstop Manny Rodriguez hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning against Felix Viloria, who allowed five earned runs in three innings of relief after starter Chance Kirby (Loss, 2-3) gave up seven earned runs in his three frames. Connecticut allowed a season-high 17 hits as Brooklyn scored more runs against the Tigers than any other New York-Penn League team this season.
Connecticut rallied against Cyclones starter Briam Campusano (Win, 3-5) in the sixth inning and designated hitter Gresuan Silverio pushed him out of the game with a two-out, two-run single to right. The Tigers scored six unanswered runs late to narrow the final margin. Ames highlighted a three-run eighth inning with his second NYPL solo homer that flew out to right field. The 21-year-old first baseman from UNLV now owns seven home runs in 31 games as a pro.
Hampton led off the ninth inning with his third walk of the game and later scored on a second RBI groundout from Cam Warner. Defensively, Hampton made a sliding catch in center field on wet, artificial turf and also threw out Senger trying to stretch a single into a double during the sixth inning.
On Thursday, the Tigers meet Brooklyn again in the second game of the series. Connecticut right-handed pitcher Carlos Guzman (2-2, 4.02) draws the start against Cyclones righty Christian James (2-1, 2.36) with first pitch at 7 p.m. Coverage on the Norwich Courtyard by Marriott Connecticut Tigers Radio Network begins with Kevin Gehl at 6:50 p.m. on WICH 1310 AM and online at CTTigers.com via TuneIn Radio.
