Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release
BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Carlos Guzman pitched the longest start of his professional career with four hits sprinkled across seven innings but a solo homer by Carlos Cortes put the Brooklyn Cyclones (28-25) ahead for good in a 2-0 loss by the Connecticut Tigers (23-26) on Thursday night at MCU Park.
Guzman (Loss, 2-3) retired the first 10 Cyclones he faced before Cortes took him deep to right field for his third home run in 29 games with Brooklyn this season. The 20-year-old righty from Venezuela held Brooklyn scoreless through the next 2 2/3 innings to finish with one earned run and six strikeouts.
Connecticut settled for one extra-base hit in nine innings. Isrrael De La Cruz doubled against Brooklyn starter Christian James (Win, 3-1) in the third and moved no further. James lasted a career-high seven innings and held the Tigers to three hits with six strikeouts.
Dylan Stock struck out two Cyclones in the seventh and All-Star closer Yaya Chentouf gave up an eighth-inning sacrifice fly to left field by Cortes for his second RBI of the game.
Brooklyn relievers Eric Hanhold (Hold, 1) and Tommy Wilson (Save, 1), son of actor Thomas F. Wilson who played Biff Tannen in the Back to the Future movies, pitched two perfect innings of relief to finish off the Tigers in two hours and seven minutes; their shortest game of the season.
On Friday, the Tigers try to avoid a sweep at Brooklyn. Connecticut's starting pitcher is to-be-determined and the Cyclones will send righty Yeizo Campos (0-0, 4.05) out to throw first pitch at 6:40 p.m. Coverage on the Norwich Courtyard by Marriott Connecticut Tigers Radio Network begins with Kevin Gehl at 6:30 p.m. on WICH 1310 AM and online at CTTigers.com via TuneIn Radio.
