Denver, Colo. - Colorado Crush defensive specialist Rashad Floyd has been named the Arena Football League's ADT Defensive Player of the Week for Week 5 of the 2005 season, the league announced today.
Floyd (5-9, 180, Portland State), in his fourth AFL season and second with Colorado, helped lead the Central Division leading Crush to a 58-40 victory over the Los Angeles Avengers on Sunday. Floyd recorded an AFL record 17.5 total tackles (17 solo) in the game, including a tackle for a loss and three pass break-ups as the Crush held the Avengers nearly 15 points below their season-scoring average.
This marks the second time the All-Arena performer has an earned an AFL weekly honor. Floyd also earned Defensive Player of the Week following Week 8 of the 2004 season. He is the first Crush player to earn a weekly award this season, the fourth time in franchise history a player garnered Defensive Player of the Week honors. Crush players have also earned Ironman of the Week awards four times, but no Crush player has ever been named Offensive Player of the Week.
Already the AFL's single-season record holder with 123.0 tackles in 2004, Floyd is leading the league again this season with 51.5 tackles and is on pace for a record-shattering 164.8.
With the victory and Chicago's loss to Orlando, Colorado (3-2) gained sole possession of first place in the Central Division and moved into a tie with Los Angeles (3-2) and Las Vegas (3-2) atop the American Conference.
