Connecticut Crush News Release

NEWINGTON, CT – May 12, 2003 – The Connecticut Crush Women's Professional Football Team improved to 4-0 this past Saturday and claimed sole possession of first place in the Northern Division with a dramatic come-from-behind victory on the road versus the Mass Mutiny.

The Crush took the early lead on a quarterback sneak by Donna Bruce #9 on the Mutiny 1-yard line with 6:19 left in the first quarter. The extra point by Philippa Scott #85 was successful, giving the Crush a 7-0 lead.

The Mutiny responded with 20 unanswered points in the second quarter beginning with an 11-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Karolyn Domini to Ginger Sanford. A fumble recovery caused the Mutiny to regain possession on the Crush 34-yard line. They capitalized with a 66-yard drive down the field, ending with a 14-yard touchdown run by Candi Shoemaker. The Crush offense struggled on the following possession and were forced to punt. Once again, the Mutiny took advantage and QB Domini connected with Sanford for another TD with 16 seconds left in the half. A missed extra point by Sara Moon gave the Mutiny a 20-7 halftime lead.

The Crush regrouped in the second half and the defense was determined to hold the Mutiny scoreless for the remainder of the game. Massachusetts threatened to score on two more occasions but back-to-back penalties and a missed field goal prevented them from building on the lead. The Crush dominated the fourth quarter. Bruce scored again on a quarterback sneak with 7:49 on the clock. A missed extra point made the score 20-13. The fierce Crush defense, led by Defensive End Stefanie Lake #96 and Safety Caroline Bell #33, forced the Mutiny to punt on the possession, giving Connecticut one final opportunity. The Crush marched 90 yards downfield and Bruce completed a 17-yard TD pass to rookie sensation Kim Palmer #13 who bobbled the catch in the end zone but completed the play with time running out. Running Back April Meyer #20 ran in the 2-point conversion with no time on the clock to give the Crush a stunning 21-20 victory over their division rivals much to the delight of Crush fans.

The CT Crush host the Mass Mutiny this Saturday, May 17th at Veteran's Memorial Stadium in New Britain when these two teams will once again battle it out for the top spot in the Northern Division.
