Connecticut Crush News Release

NEWINGTON, CT – June 3, 2003 – The Connecticut Crush Women's Professional Football Team fell to 4-2 and second place in the Northern Division this past Saturday with a 40-7 loss to the Philadelphia Phoenix.

The Crush posed no threat for the Phoenix on this rain soaked evening. Philadelphia, determined to avenge their only loss of the season, attacked the Crush defense early. The Phoenix scored on their first possession of the game with a 64-yard touchdown run down the middle of the field by Fullback Rachelle Pecovsky #34. With 12:59 left in the second quarter, Pecovsky scored again on a 5-yard run but a missed extra point made it 13-0. A touchdown run by Philadelphia's Mia Brickhouse at 9:12 remaining in the half gave the Phoenix a 20-0 lead. The Crush's next drive was stopped short when a pass by Connecticut Quarterback Donna Bruce #9 intended for April Meyer #20 was intercepted by Philadelphia's Jen Powell #13. But the Crush defense held to give the team one more opportunity to narrow the gap before halftime. The offense answered with a 28-yard touchdown pass from Bruce to Wide Receiver Kim Palmer #13. The Phoenix led at halftime by a score of 20-7.

In the second half, the Crush attempted to regroup, but a costly fumble at the Crush 18-yard line led to another Philadelphia score. This time it was Philadelphia Quarterback Zeffi Angelikas #14 with the touchdown run. The Crush's biggest play of the night came off a hook and ladder pass from Bruce to Palmer who then handed off Meyer for a 60 yard gain deep in Philadelphia territory. But the Phoenix defense kept the Crush out of the end zone and regained possession. Pecovsky scored on a 1-yard touchdown run at 9:51 in the fourth quarter. Shortly after, the Crush lost possession with another interception by Powell followed by a 24-yard return. Again it was Pecovsky, scoring her fourth rushing touchdown on the night with a 3-yard gain. The Phoenix increased their lead to 40-7 and moved into first place in the division with the victory.

The CT Crush host the Maine Freeze this Saturday, June 7th at Veteran's Memorial Stadium in New Britain for the last home game of the regular season. Kickoff is 7:35 PM. For more details on the 2003 Connecticut Crush season, visit the team website at www.crushfootball.com.
