Syracuse, NY (March 4,2012) - Goals from Riley Holzapfel and Brandon McMillan lifted the Crunch over the Albany Devils 2-1 tonight at the Times Union Center.
Crunch netminder Iiro Tarkki turned aside 26 of 27 shots in the win, giving the Crunch four of a possible six points on the weekend.
The Crunch opened the scoring 4:40 into the first period with a goal from Holzapfel. Holzapfel beat Albany goaltender Jeff Frazee for his 11th goal of the year, assisted by Kyle Palmieri and Sean Zimmerman. By picking up a point on the play Palmieri extended his team-leading point streak to seven games.
Despite outshooting the Devils 10-5 in the second stanza the Crunch could not get past Frazee to add to their 1-0 lead. After 40 minutes of play the Crunch had a 16-7 shot advantage over the Devils.
Peter Harrold ended Tarkki's shutout bid with a power-play goal at the 15:54 mark of the third period. Assists went to Mike Hoeffel and Joe Whitney.
Center Brandon McMillan regained the Crunch lead and secured a 2-1 victory with his 10th goal of the season with 2:14 remaining in regulation.
Crunchables: The Crunch improve to 20-5-1-4 when scoring the game's first goal...This is the first time the Crunch have won on a Sunday during the 2011-12 campaign...The Crunch are 5-12-3-3 in games following a win...Ryan O'Marra picked up his first point as a member of the Crunch by earning an assist on Brandon McMillan's goal.
