Syracuse Crunch News Release
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse Crunch built a two-goal lead before the Toronto Marlies climbed back and stole a 3-2 victory in a five-round shootout tonight at the War Memorial Arena.
Kevin Lynch opened scoring in the first period and netted the team's only shootout marker, while Tanner Richard tallied one in the middle stanza. Tye McGinn made it a multi-point night with two assists. The loss moves the Crunch to 34-23-6-7 on the season. The Marlies take the eight-game season series, 5-2-1-0.
Goaltender Kristers Gudlevskis made 21 saves in net for the Crunch and stopped 3-of-5 shootout attempts. Kasimir Kaskisuo turned aside 30-of-32 for the Marlies and 4-of-5 in the shootout. Syracuse went 0-for-3 on the power play and 2-for-3 on the penalty kill.
The Crunch opened scoring just 5:06 into the first period. McGinn fired a shot that ricocheted back out off Kaskisuo's pads. Lynch picked up the rebound in the slot, dragged it around a defender and shoveled a backhander back door.
Richard built a two-goal lead for the Crunch at the 6:58 mark of the middle frame. Erik Condra skated the puck in and fired on net. McGinn got a stick on the rebound, but was blocked before Richard chipped in the loose puck from the left side of the crease.
Just as the Crunch killed the first penalty of a 5-on-3 advantage, the Marlies cut the lead in half. Brett Findlay and Trevor Moore moved the puck with a series of quick passes across the zone before Brendan Leipsic one-timed a feed from below the right circle with 7:55 remaining in the second.
The Marlies evened the score early in the third period to eventually force overtime. Mike Sislo passed the puck out from behind the net for Frederik Gauthier to send home from the left circle. Andreas Johnsson recorded a point with the secondary helper.
Following a scoreless overtime frame, the Marlies eventually took their second consecutive win in a shootout. Seth Griffith scored in the first round before Lynch netted one in the third. Dmytro Timashov found the back of the net in the fifth round to take the victory for Toronto.
