Crew Offers Bobbleheads

Columbus Crew SC News Release

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Columbus Crew General Manager Jim Smith announced today that The Crew is venturing into the nation's promotional Bobblehead craze for the first time this season, offering a special package by direct mail to youth soccer (USYSA) players in Ohio, Kentucky, Michigan, Indiana and western Pennsylvania.

The theme of the Bobblehead promotion is to promote three of The Crew's top all-time players, along with three more MLS greats, with the popular collectible novelties, then tie them into a family package for selected games. There are four games for those who receive the offer to choose from and the $88-per-game packages include four tickets, four hot dogs, four Pepsi's, four Graeter's Columbus Crew Chip ice cream cups and two great collectible Bobbleheads.

The Crew's Brian McBride and San Jose's Landon Donovan are the featured Bobbleheads for both the May 18 and June 15 matches, when Columbus welcomes the defending MLS Cup-champion Earthquakes to Crew Stadium. Former Crew goalkeeper Brad Friedel and MLS legend Carlos Valderrama will appear on the "Bobble Marquee" when "El Pibe's" Colorado Rapids come to town on July 20 and ex-Crew scoring machine Stern John and L.A. Galaxy forward Cobi Jones will be immortalized at the August 14 game vs. Los Angeles.

"This is a fun and exciting promotion for The Crew," Smith said. "Bobbleheads are extremely popular right now and we are optimistic that they will help us achieve our goal of continuing to develop young soccer players in our region into committed Crew fans, who have an affinity for our team and for MLS."

McBride, The Crew's MVP in 1996, Friedel, the 1997 team MVP, and John, winner of the same award in 1998, are arguably the three greatest players to ever don the Black & Gold. McBride remains with The Crew and has all but locked up a starting role on the 2002 U.S. World Cup team. Friedel currently stars for Blackburn Rovers of the English Premier League and is battling for the starting goalkeeper position on the U.S. World Cup team. John, one of the most prolific scorers in MLS history, now plays for Birmingham City of the English First Division.

The 20-year-old Donovan, one of the most gifted American players ever, is widely regarded as the "future" of the U.S. National Team; Jones is the Galaxy's all-time leading scorer and one of the most-capped players in international soccer history; and Valderrama, a perennial MLS All-Star, is one of world soccer's most-recognizable players.
