August 1, 2002 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Buffalo Destroyers News Release
(BUFFALO, NY) â Buffalo Destroyers OL/DL Jerry Crafts off-season lasted approximately three days as he signed a free agent contract with the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League on Tuesday. The 34-year-old veteran will play guard and tackle.
The Alouettes are currently the only undefeated team in the CFL at 5-0 and hold a three game lead over Ottawa in the East Division. Montreal has 13 games remaining in their season. The CFL season wraps up in late November with the Grey Cup championship game in Edmonton. Crafts will be placed on the Destroyers exempt list and should he return to the Arena Football League, his rights will belong to Buffalo.
This season with the Destroyers, Crafts became the largest player in AFL history to score a touchdown when he intercepted Toronto QB Pat O'Hara week nine and returned it 39 yards for a touchdown. The interception was the first of his career and he also set a team record for longest INT return. He set a career high with two pass defenses in the Toronto game as well. Crafts finished the 2002 campaign with 3.5 tackles and eight pass breakups. The well traveled Crafts holds the unofficial record for games played in different leagues. He has played for six different teams in four different leagues in the past two years. Over his 12 year career, Crafts has played 16 seasons of football for 12 teams in five leagues.
In 2001, Crafts suited up for the LA Xtreme of the XFL before coming to the Destroyers. After the Destroyers season, Crafts was in the Oakland Raiders training camp but was cut on the final day. He joined the Toronto Argonauts of the CFL before rejoining the Raiders in November. Crafts started his career with the Orlando Thunder of the World League of American Football in 1991. He played for the Buffalo Bills from 1992-94 and the Philadelphia Eagles from 1997-98. In 1996, he was a member of the Amsterdam Admirals of NFL Europe and started his career in the AFL with the New Jersey Red Dogs in 2000.
