New Mexico Scorpions News Release

ALBUQUERQUE – The New Mexico Scorpions of the Central Hockey League announced today that rookie left wing Ladislav Kouba (pronounced KOO-bah) has been assigned to the team by the Phoenix Coyotes of the National Hockey League. Kouba was a seventh round selection (216th overall) of the Coyotes in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.

Kouba, 21, has played in ten games this season with the Coyotes' ECHL affiliate, the (Boise) Idaho Steelheads, registering no points and two penalty minutes. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound native of Vimperk, Czech Republic played three and a half seasons of junior hockey with the Red Deer Rebels of the Western Hockey League, where won a Memorial Cup and advanced to two WHL Finals.

His best season with the Rebels came in 2002-03, when he posted 12 goals and 40 points in 68 games. Kouba added 11 points (5g-6a) in 23 playoff contests. He began last season with the Springfield Falcons of the American Hockey League before seeing time with the Adirondack (Glens Falls, N.Y.) Icehawks of the United Hockey League and Red Deer.

"We're excited that Phoenix is assigning Ladislav to our team," said Scorpions Head Coach/Assistant General Manager Bill McDonald. "He's a big, young player with a lot of upside who played for a tremendous junior program in Red Deer. Ladislav has a lot of skill and we look forward to giving him a chance to develop with us."

Kouba is expected to be in the lineup this weekend when the Scorpions return to action following the All-Star break as they host the league-leading Wichita Thunder this Friday, Jan. 14 and Saturday, Jan. 15 at Tingley Coliseum. Both games start at 7:05 p.m., and Friday's game will be broadcast on Sports Radio 610 The Sports Animal and on the Internet at www.scorpionshockey.com and www.broadcastmonsters.com beginning at 6:50 p.m. with the Voice of the Scorpions Mike Sheehan.
