Coyotes Bye Week Update

April 9, 2008 - arenafootball2 (af2)
Central Valley Coyotes News Release

The Coyotes kicked off the 2008 season with championship aspirations and their sights set on another playoff run.

2008 started off with a bang as Central Valley went in to the swamps of Bossier- Shreveport Louisiana and knocked off the No. 3 ranked Battlewings 55-54 in week 1.

Rookie QB Joe Ayoob had a solid first game, throwing for five touchdowns and rushing for two more. Second year WR Tonae Martin had three catches which all went for touchdowns. DB Maurice Holmes had an outstanding game in the defensive secondary as he was responsible for three forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries.

Week 2 didn't fair so well for the Coyotes as they dropped to 1-1 after a road loss to the Amarillo Dusters 71-60. Despite the loss, Ayoob had another strong performance. The former Cal Bears QB completed 22 of his 36 passes for 316 yards and had six touchdowns through the air. Ayoob also added two rushing touchdowns to give him eight total scores for the game. His performance in the first two games has Ayoob ranked 7th in the league in passing average and 6th in the league in total offense.

The Coyotes have also gotten a spark in 2008 from second year WR/KR Jomo Wilson. Wilson was seldom used in his seven games of 2007, but has found a home returning kicks for the Coyotes in 2008. After the first two games of the year, Wilson is 2nd in the league in all purpose yards and 9th in the af2 in kick return average.

WR Nichiren Flowers had a break out performance in Central Valley's week 2 loss. Flowers, a Tulare native, strapped on a Coyotes helmet for the first time in Amarillo, and proceed to haul in 11 catches for 185 yards and three touchdowns. Combine Flowers' efforts, with the already dangerous tandem of WR's Jason Barnes and Tonae Martin, and the Coyotes have offensive weapons all over the field.

Central Valley hits the road again on April 19th as they take on their closest rival, the Stockton Lightning. These two teams are very familiar with each other, playing six times in the past two seasons. The Coyotes hold a decided advantage against Stockton, going 5-1 in their six meetings. Central Valley has enjoyed a plus four turnover margin against the Lightning and have averaged 10 points more a game in the teams' six battles.

The Coyotes home opener will be held on April 26th at Selland Arena. Kickoff will be at 7:00pm and Central Valley will be hosting their West Division rival, Spokane Shock. The first 2,000 fans in attendance will receive a 2008 Central Valley Coyotes schedule magnet, sponsored by Eye-Q Vision Center. Tickets are still available for the Coyotes home opener.
