Cowen and Brust Win Calder Cup

In four short seasons Jared Cowen has won a Memorial Cup as a champion of the Canadian Hockey League and a Calder Cup in the American Hockey League. The defenseman helped the Binghamton Senators, the AHL affiliate of the Ottawa Senators, to a six game series win over the over the Houston Aeros after his WHL season ended in the Western Conference Finals with Spokane against the Portland Winterhawks.

Ottawa's first round pick, ninth overall, in 2009 appeared in 10 playoff games with Binghamton, had four assists and was a +6. He did not play in the decisive game six of the finals due to injury. As a Chief, Cowen won a Memorial Cup championship as a 16-year-old rookie, was named as one of the Top 25 Chiefs in 25 Years and earned a pair of silver medals with Team Canada at the World Junior Hockey Championships. This past season in Spokane, his fourth as a Chief, Cowen had a career high 18 goals, 30 assists and 48 points.

Cowen was joined by goaltender Barry Brust as one of two former Chiefs to win with Binghamton. The Chiefs all-time goaltending leader in games (161) and minutes (9,150) played did not appear in the final series, but did win 29 games in the regular season, including seven shutouts, and posted a 2.53 goals against average. Brust was a Chief from 2000-2004 and was named the Western Conference Goaltender of the Year in 2002 with a 2.58 GAA and .912 save percentage.

The title came against the Houston Aeros which featured a pair of former Chiefs of their own in Justin Falk and Jared Spurgeon. Both were a part of the Chiefs 2008 Memorial Cup Championship club with Cowen.
