Snohomish County Explosion News Release

Monroe, Washington - May 22nd 2009 - The Explosion Basketball team has been a leader in minor league basketball and now thanks to the "Pride on the East Side" Group, they have a chance to do something very seldom done by sports teams. Let people come out to a game for free! The City of Snohomish is first on a list of towns that will give free tickets away to anyone that lives in the town to attend an upcoming Explosion Basketball game on May 30th. This coming Saturday, the club has made five thousand FREE general admission tickets available to the general public.

These tickets will be available at many Snohomish stores and shops, starting Saturday afternoon look for the "Free Ticket Night" signs on display or ask you retailer if they have the free vouchers. With over 50 stores planning to participate, and all of which are located within a 15-mile radius of Monroe Sports Arena, finding the FREE vouchers should be easy. Each voucher is valid for one ticket, and fans may take up to 5 ticket vouchers at one time. At first glance, this offer seems (for lack of a better word) insane. Aren't the Explosion forfeiting nearly all of their ticket revenue, in effect giving away thousands of dollars of product away for free? "In this economy, it's time for Minor League Basketball teams to step up and show that they truly are an asset to the community. We're not just here to open the gates and take your money," said Courtyard Media Foundation president and owner Nathan Mumm. "A lot of people think we're crazy, but we don't see it that way. Times are tough and we want the whole family to have a night out of basketball fun. If we do not make our quota for ticket revenue for the game, but we have a community fun event that is just fine for us."

Indeed, there is a method to the Explosions' madness. The team is offering those with free general admission tickets the opportunity to upgrade to reserved seats (typically $8), for just $2 more. Mumm is hoping to get local sponsors to offer additional coupons as well at the games. Out of the two thousand tickets that have been distributed, the team is hoping that 10 percent (200) result in upgrades. Attendance has not been a problem for the Explosion this year as attendance has increased 18% from last years numbers but a standing room only arena is always a plus for the home team. Of course, many fans will opt for the free general admission. Regardless, a packed house results in maximum bang for the sponsor's buck.

Therefore, this ticket offer should increase the willingness of local businesses to partner with the Explosion. There's no real precedent for what Courtyard Media Foundation is doing, but the team is of the belief that "tough times call for creative measures".

"How many other companies can honestly say come be a part of a professional sporting event and bring the family for FREE?" said Mumm. "Basically, we're telling the public that 'May 30th residents in the town of Snohomish please come out to the game on us.'"

"The Pride on the East Side" group has another night still upcoming for the town of Monroe, but many town mayors on the East Side of I-5 have not responded to this free family event for local citizens and business. Encourage your town mayor to be apart of this great family fun event.
