Courage's Slaton Named As WUSA All-Star; Fotopoulos Snubbed

Carolina Courage News Release

Morrisville, NC (June 10, 2003) - The Carolina Courage's Danielle Slaton, the 2002 WUSA Defender of the Year, was selected to the reserve squad of the American All-Stars for the upcoming Hyundai WUSA All-Star Game on June 19. Slaton will join Courage teammates Tiffany Roberts (American All-Star), Birgit Prinz and Unni Lehn (World All-Stars), who had previously been named as starters.

WUSA American Stars Head Coach Jim Gabarra and WUSA World Stars manager Tom Stone, in conjunction with WUSA Commissioner Tony DiCicco, selected the reserves for each team.

Beat coach Tom Stone replaced Japanese midfielder Homare Sawa, who was named as a starter but cannot participate due to national team conflicts, with Atlanta teammate Charmaine Hooper. In addition to Hooper, Stone named Boston's Dagny Mellgren, San Jose's Diane Alagich, San Diego's Julie Fleeting, Washington's Kelly Golebiowski and San Jose's Lakeysia Beene to the World Stars. Beene was named to the World Stars due to the limited number of international goalkeepers in the WUSA.

Washington coach Jim Gabarra selected Freedom goalkeeper Siri Mullinix, Atlanta forward Cindy Parlow, Philadelphia's Heather Mitts and New York's Shannon Boxx to the American Stars.

The most glaring omission from 32-player selection of All-Stars is Courage forward Danielle Fotopoulos. Fotopoulos, whose six goals and five assists in eight games places her in the top three of every offensive category this season, was named the WUSA Player of the Month in May. Fotopoulos also holds the record for career points scored in the WUSA. Ironically, it was against Gabarra's Washington Freedom on May 17th that Fotopoulos had a breakout performance this season. She figured in all five goals, scoring two and assisting three, in Carolina's 5-2 defeat of then first-place Washington.

The Hyundai WUSA All-Star Game will take place at SAS Stadium in Cary, NC on June 19 and will be televised live on ESPN2 at 7:30 pm ET.
