Carolina Courage News Release
Richmond, VA. (March 20, 2002) The Carolina Courage defeated the New York Power, 2-1, today in a preseason scrimmage at Striker Park in Richmond, Virginia. The practice game was part of the WUSA's East Coast Spring Training, which runs from March 19-24 and features six of the eight WUSA teams.
The Courage went ahead in the 16th minute, when midfielder Meghan Anderson pounced on a Kim Yankowski cross and rifled it into the New York goal.
New York knotted the score 11 minutes later, when New York's Minna Mustonen received a nice pass from Power teammate Emily Janss. The Finnish striker, who moments earlier had struck the cross bar, buried her shot into the far left corner of the net.
The game was decided in the final minutes, when Carolina's speedy forward, Venus James, picked the pocket of New York goalkeeper Saskia Webber. With her back to net, James dribbled away from the goal, spun around, and played a smart pass across the goalmouth to teammate Nicole Roberts. Roberts ran onto the ball and tucked it into the Power goal for the game winner.
The Courage will next face the Philadelphia Charge at 3:00 pm on Saturday, March 23 at the University of Richmond Stadium in game 1 of the WUSA's Preseason Match Day Triple-header. To order tickets, visit the Richmond Strikers website at www.strikersonline.com or call (804) 288-4625.
