CARY, N.C. - The North Carolina Courage played to a 1-1 draw with the Chicago Red Stars Sunday afternoon at WakeMed Soccer Park. The Courage, who played down a player for much of the match, are in second place in the NWSL table with 27 points (8W-6L-3D).

The Courage got off to a banner start, holding over 80% of possession in the first quarter-hour and taking an early lead. Kerolin Nicoli made an instant impact in her return to the club, lofting an assist to Tess Boade to chip Alyssa Naeher and put the home side in front in the 14'.

The mood was dampened just moments later, when Emily Fox committed a professional foul 40 yards from goal. She was initially shown a yellow card, but VAR intervened to upgrade the punishment to a straight red card for a professional foul as last defender. Forced out of their shape, the Courage still carried much of the possession throughout the first half, but Chicago grew into the game in the second and found the equalizer on a corner kick just past the hour mark. Tatumn Milazzo headed home the insert from Julia Bianchi to level the score for what would be a 1-1 final.

The Courage had chances to add to, and regain, the lead throughout the day. Tyler Lussi struck woodwork in the first half and a VAR-reviewed penalty gave an opportunity to regain the lead late in the second half, but the take missed just wide of the right post.
