Carolina Courage News Release
Morrisville, NC (March 7, 2003) - The reigning WUSA Champion Carolina Courage will travel to Wilmington, NC today to prepare for a preseason exhibition match Saturday night against the Washington Freedom. The Courage and the Freedom last met on August 24, 2002 in the WUSA Championship match. Carolina edged Washington, 3-2, in that contest to win the Founders Cup trophy.
Hosted by the Wilmington Hammerheads, the USL Pro Select League's national champion runners-up in 2002, the WUSA exhibition game will kick off at 7:30 pm at the Legion Sports Complex. Tickets prices for the exhibition are $14 for adults and $10 for children. Tickets will be sold online at www.wilmingtonhammerheads.com and also by calling (910) 796-0076 ext.22.
Courage head coach Jay Entlich will be using this exhibition match as a means of evaluating the returning talent from last season's championship side as well as Carolina's draftees and tryout players. The Courage will be without its four international players - German striker Birgit Prinz, Norwegian midfielders Hege Riise and Unni Lehn, and Canadian defender Breanna Boyd - who are overseas with their respective national teams. Boyd, the Courage's first round pick in last month's WUSA draft, will get her first introduction to her stateside teammates Riise and Lehn on opposite sides of the playing field. Canada faces off against Norway on March 18th at the Algarve Cup in Portugal. The team will also be without veteran defender Carla Overbeck, who gave birth on Wednesday to her second child, a 7 lbs., 11 oz. baby girl named Carson Elizabeth. Courage captain Tiffany Roberts and WUSA Defender of the Year Danielle Slaton will play in Saturday's exhibition match, then quickly fly over to Portugal to meet up with the U.S. National Team for the Algarve Cup.
The Courage will begin its defense of the Founders Cup trophy on Saturday, April 5th at 2 pm at SAS Stadium in Cary. The season will begin in dramatic fashion with a rematch of the championship game, as Mia Hamm and the Washington Freedom come to town. Season seats begin at only $95 for the entire 12-game season and can be purchased by calling the Courage ticket office at (919) 573-7626 or by visiting online at www.carolinacourage.com.
