Cottonmouths Sign Fan Favorite, Shannon Szabados, for Second Full Season

COLUMBUS, Ga. - Shannon Szabados will be returning to the Snake Pit for her second full season in net for the Snakes. Szabados is the third woman to play men's professional hockey. She also has represented her home country, Canada by winning two Olympic Gold Medals (2009 & 2013), multiple world championship medals, and a plethora of other awards and championships won on the professional and junior level.

Born in Edmonton, Alberta, Szabados career started in 2002, playing in 15 games in the AJHL. She broke gender barriers at Grant MacEwan College in 2007, when she was the first woman to play on the men's team. In her time at Grant MacEwan College, she played in a total of 63 games. Szabados finished her collegiate career at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, playing in a total of 17 games. In addition to her collegiate career, Szabados has a goals against average of only 1.38 with the Canadian National Team.

In Szabados' first full season with the Snakes, she played in 25 games, had a goals against average of 3.12, and had a save percentage of .907.

"We gave Shannon a chance and she did not disappoint," stated Coach Bechard. "She is kind, competitive, and an important piece to our team. Her success has helped suppress the negative phrase of 'playing like a girl.'"
