Lubbock Cotton Kings News Release
âKINGS SPLIT PRESEASON
For the third consecutive pre-season, the Lubbock Cotton Kings split their pre-season record by falling to the New Mexico Scorpions Friday night 7-2 in Sante Fe and rebounding for a 3-1 victory over the Odessa Jackalopes Saturday night at the Lubbock Municipal Coliseum.
Friday, the Cotton Kings dressed a younger squad mixed with new faces and some old faces. Mike Hiebert and Dave MacIntyre each tallied goals for the âKings, but New Mexico's 10 power play opportunities allowed the Scorpions to grab 4 power play goals. Scorpions forward Chris Richards recorded a 4-point night with a goal and 3 assists.
Saturday night, the Cotton Kings were without the services of Derek Holland and Jan Melichercik, but still prevailed for a 3-1 win over the Odessa Jackalopes. The victory was the first Cotton Kings pre-season victory at home since the inaugural 99/00 season. Lubbock built a 2-0 lead at the beginning of the second period after Mike Hiebert collected his second pre-season goal in the first period and Jeff Dewar collected his first of the pre-season 1:48 into the second period. Brusseau's only down moment of the evening came in the second period, as a flurry in front of the net resulted in Brusseau and a 'Kings defenseman losing their sticks. Odessa would work the puck in front to Brent McKenzie to convert on the opportunity, which he did by placing it past the stick-less Mike Brusseau. Lubbock resumed with a two-goal lead late in the second period with 19-year-old rookie Matic Kralj contributing with a power play tally. Lubbock's defense would maintain the two-goal cushion the rest of the way to garner the win. MELICHERCIK'S JOURNEY
Cotton Kings forward and co-leader in scoring last season Jan Melichercik and his wife Katrina Melichercikova are expected to arrive into Lubbock this evening from their native land of Slovakia. The two were late arriving to Lubbock as they were awaiting paperwork to be processed by customs and immigrations in Slovakia and travel arrangements.

DEPARTURES
Coach Bill McDonald made his first roster changes today releasing rookie forwards Lincoln Beaudry, Chet Camrud and Chad Peck. Beaudry, who played junior hockey with Humboldt of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League last season, played Friday night in New Mexico and failed to register any points. Camrud was looking for his second stint with the team, but is released after registering 4 penalty minutes and no points during Friday night's game. Peck played in both exhibition games and collected an assist on Jeff Dewar's goal against the Jackalopes for his lone point in camp. The cuts were very tough for Coach McDonald, who has to narrow down the roster to 18 healthy players by 5PM Wednesday. With the 3 cuts today, the Cotton Kings have 21 players remaining in camp.
