Cosmos to Hold Breast Cancer Awareness Night

NEW YORK (July 10, 2014) - The New York Cosmos announced today details of Breast Cancer Awareness Night on Saturday, Oct. 4, when the Cosmos take on Indy Eleven at Hofstra University's Shuart Stadium. The Cosmos will work in conjunction with the American Cancer Society and Main Street Radiology to raise funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer.

The New York Cosmos will be donating a portion of the proceeds from ticket sales for the match to the American Cancer Society in their efforts to drive cancer research, patient service programs, and early detection, and the first 4,000 fans to enter Shuart Stadium will receive a pink scarf courtesy of Main Street Radiology.

"We are determined to finish the fight against breast cancer, and the New York Cosmos are helping us get there," said Sadia Mehmood with the American Cancer Society. "The funds raised through Breast Cancer Awareness Night will help provide free wigs, lodging and support services to cancer patients across New York, not to mention support for our lifesaving cancer research. It's a ticket to a cancer-free tomorrow."

In addition, the Cosmos and American Cancer Society will honor breast cancer survivors during a special halftime ceremony, and a signed Cosmos team jersey will be raffled with all proceeds going to the American Cancer Society.

"Main Street Radiology is proud to support the American Cancer Society and The New York Cosmos in raising awareness against breast cancer," said David Rogers, M.D., President of Main Street Radiology. "In conjunction with these two outstanding organizations, Main Street Radiology can continue to educate women about the critical significance of screening mammography in the early detection of breast cancer which has been proven to save lives."

This marks the second annual Breast Cancer Awareness Night the New York Cosmos have hosted in collaboration with American Cancer Society and Main Street Radiology.

"We are pleased to be working with the American Cancer Society and Main Street Radiology once again in support of this important cause," Cosmos Chief Operating Officer Erik Stover said. "With the support of our fans, we are hoping we can help these two organizations raise money and awareness for the fight against breast cancer."

In addition, New York Cosmos staff and players will be participating in Making Strides Against Breast Cancer which takes place on Oct. 19 at Corona Park in Queens.

Every Making Strides event is an opportunity to honor breast cancer survivors, raise awareness and help raise money to help the American Cancer Society fight the disease.

The Cosmos return to action Saturday, July 12 against the San Antonio Scorpions in the team's NASL 2014 Fall Season Opener. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. ET at Hofstra University's Shuart Stadium.
