Rockville, MD.... With a strong second half performance from Elias Ayuso and a dominant overall outing for David Cortes, The Puerto Rico Capitanes overwhelmed the Maryland Greenhawks 111-93 at Wootten High School Saturday Night.
The first quarter was played competitively with Puerto Rico leading by as much as 11. Randy Gill (5pts) made his return to Maryland last night by entering the game and hitting a deep three pointer to cut the Capitanes lead to 23-18. Puerto Rico finished the quarter on a 7-2 run.
Second Quarter would see a powerful surge from the Greenhawks who went on a 20-10 run. Byron Mouton (15 points) two point basket in the lane cut the lead to 41-40 Capitanes. Rafeal Cruz (7 points) hit a three pointer as time expired to give Puerto Rico a 53-47 Lead at the the half.
The second half started out strong for Maryland after back to back baskets from both Harvey Thomas (12 pts) and Michael Anderson (8 pts) made the game 58-55 Puerto Rico. At the end of the third quarter the score was 81-71
The fourth quarter belonged to the Capitanes behind David Cortes (28 pts) Elias Ayuso (21 pts) and Jeff Aubrey (17pts, 13 rbs). Puerto Rico finished the game on a 30-22 run for a final score of 111-93.
Notable performances came from the Capitanes Antonio Latimer (9pts) and Raul Rivera (8 pts). Greenhawks saw Scooter Sherrill finish with 21 points and Harvey Thomas have 12 points and 6 rebounds.
Puerto Rico will travel to Rochester to face the Razorsharks on Monday February 15th, while the Greenhawks will travel to Novia Scotia, Canada to meet the Halifax Rainmen on Saturday February 20th.
