Corpus Christi Cruises to a 86 – 19 Victory

Corpus Christi Hammerheads News Release

Corpus Christi, TX - The Corpus Christi Hammerheads (2-2) played an unusual opponent Friday night in the South Texas Bonecrushers at the American Bank Center and cruised to an easy 86-19 victory in front of 3000 screaming fans.

The unusual opponent came about due to a reshuffling of the season schedule that began when the Lafayette Wildcats folded on the eve of the 2011 season leaving a number of teams a hole to fill on their home schedule. The Hammerheads filled the void originally with the East Texas Wranglers of the IIFL. However, a scheduling issue arose with the Wranglers setting up Friday nights contest with the Bonecrushers of the MPFL.

Despite being an outdoor team, the Hammerheads took no pity on South Texas opening the game with a one play scoring play when QB Andre Anthony hit WR Corey Brittian with a 37 yard strike to open the scoring. That opened the flood gate and the Hammerhead never looked back in route to the big win. The offense was so successful the Hammerheads never faced a 3rd down all night.

Anthony had a second consecutive 7 TD pass game and also rushed for another. Corey Brittian also had another solid performance with 4 catches for 66 yards and two scores.

The offense wasn't the only thing that shined on Friday night as the Hammerheads returned 3 0f there 5 interceptions for score including a dazzling 57 yard return by Ruben Flowers.

"I'm happy with the win tonight, but we still had too many penalties and we have to eliminate those prior to playing Houston next week", said head coach Dustin Almond. "There's some work to do this week".

The Hammerheads will hit the road Saturday and head to Houston to take on the Division leading Stallions. Saturday's game will be Houston's home opener and the Hammerhead will be looking to spoil the party and deal the Stallions their first loss of the 2011 season. Game time Saturday is set for 7:05pm from the Merrill Center in Katy. The game can be heard locally on Sports Radio Corpus Christi, 1230am, beginning at 6:45pm.
