Corpus Christi IceRays News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI, TX - Michael Benedict scored for the second game in a row, but it was not enough as the Corpus Christi IceRays fell to the Amarillo Bulls, 3-1, at the American Bank Center on Friday night. Win the win, Amarillo improves to 16-5-1 (33 points) overall while the IceRays' record falls to 11-13-2 (24 points).
Marco Wieser made 36 saves in the losing effort.
Amarillo used early offensive possession in the IceRays defensive end to hop on the scoreboard first. After collecting a loose puck at the attacking blue line, Matt Johnson (9) sniped past Wieser's glove hand and into the back of the net, 9:05 into the first period. Corpus Christi turned the tables and tied the game at the 15:17 mark when Benedict (14) chipped one past Nikifor Szczerba off a feed from Jordan Miller. Beau Walker picked up the other assist. It remained 1-1 after twenty minutes of play with Amarillo holding a 13-8 shot advantage.
The Bulls pulled ahead for the second time of the evening early in the second period. At the 3:57 mark Zack Smoot (10) walked in on Wieser and snuck one through the Corpus Christi netminder's pads to put Amarillo ahead, 2-1. The IceRays tried to respond, but Brandon Marshall and Colton Saucerman each hit posts in the period. Shots were 12-11 in favor of the Bulls.
There was no comeback in the IceRays in the third period despite solid scoring opportunities on the net of Szczerba. The Bulls added a penalty-shot goal at the 18:20 mark of the third period off the stick of Mitch Rogge (3) to extend their final victory to 3-1. Final shots were 39-32 in favor of the Bulls.
