Corey Johnson Named US Army Ironman of the Week

March 15, 2005 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
New York Dragons News Release

Following his standout performance in the Dragons' 53-51 victory over the Georgia Force, WR/DB Corey Johnson has been named the US Army Ironman of the Week. Johnson had three touchdowns and an interception and played in every offensive and defensive series.

"Winning this award is an honor because it's my first as an Ironman," said Johnson. "The biggest part of it is that I was able to help my team win the game against a tough opponent. My teammates blocked in front of me for the returns and the defensive line pressured the quarterback on the interception. They're the ones that should receive a lot of the credit."

Due to an injury to WR/DB Will Holder during warmups, Johnson gave a true Ironman performance by playing in virtually all of the game's 99 total plays. The eight-year veteran out of the University of Georgia provided several highlight reel worthy plays, including two kick returns for touchdowns. He added a third touchdown off a 22-yard pass from QB Aaron Garcia early in the fourth quarter and finished the game with six receptions for 73 yards and a game-high 258 total yards. Defensively, Johnson recorded 4.0 tackles and a key second quarter interception.

Following his Week Seven performance, Johnson is now tied for first in the AFL for kick return touchdowns with three. He shares that distinction with teammate Will Holder. Johnson is also tied for third in the AFL in interceptions with four.

In his career, Johnson has recorded 267.5 tackles, 21 interceptions, 44 pass breakups and nine kick return touchdowns.

The Dragons start a two-game road swing this week against the Austin Wranglers. After their Week Nine contest in Columbus the following week, they return home to take on the Chicago Rush at the Nassau Coliseum on Saturday, April 2. Great seats are still available and interested fans should call 1-866-AFL-TIXX.
