
Corey Benjamin Signs with Atlanta Hawks

NORTH CHARLESTON (January 22, 2003) â Corey Benjamin has signed a 10-day contract with the Atlanta Hawks, the NBA club announced today. Benjamin is the seventh National Basketball Development League player to be "called-up" this season and the second Lowgator in 10 days to earn the call.
This is Benjamin's second tour of duty in the NBA, having played three seasons with the Chicago Bulls after being the team's first-round selection (28th overall) in the 1998 NBA Draft. His career NBA statistics include 144 games, 5.5 points and 1.6 rebounds per game.
"All that hard work paid off. It feels good to be back in the league," Benjamin said after getting the call from the Hawks.
Benjamin was the second-leading scorer in the NBDL at 18.0 points per game and fourth in the league in three-point field goal percentage at .435. Over 26 games (25 starts) he also averaged 30.6 minutes, 4.5 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game.
The Oregon State alum is the second Lowgator to sign a NBA contract in ten days. Forward Damone Brown was inked to a 10-day deal with the Washington Wizards eight days ago
Taking Benjamin's roster spot is 6-6 swingman Alpha Bangura. Bangura finished his college career at St. John's coming out a year early last season averaging 5.6 points and 2.2 assists per game. He played in the USBL last summer.
The Lowgators are currently on a ten game road trip and are playing in Greenville this evening at 7 p.m. The next home game is February 7th at the North Charleston Coliseum against the Roanoke Dazzle. Nickelodeon superstar SpongeBob SquarePants will perform throughout the game. . Ticket prices are $7.50 for children and seniors, $10.00 for members of the military and $13.00 for adults.
