Copperheads win comes in Big fashion

May 4, 2006 - National Indoor Football League (NIFL)
Texas Copperheads News Release

Reading my article will give one all the information you need prior to each upcoming Copperheads victory. I may have been a little off in my predictions this week, I predicted a 51 point win for the Copperheads and it was 72. However, a romp is a romp. Expect this trend to continue throughout the inaugural campaign.

This week the Copperheads travel to Fayetteville to take on the Arkansas Stars. The Copperheads won 49-21 win in week five. The Copperheads will roll again but closer than the last matchup as Arkansas Head Coach Raymond House has been demoted to defensive coach and the team has responded well. Look for the Copperheads to roll 38-20. It is always difficult to travel in the National Indoor Football League and the eight hour or so trip will take its toll on the Copperheads.

Why the blowout?

It is now a long home layoff for the Copperheads as they will not return home until June 9 against the lowly Monroe Gators. The Gators are winless but they almost upset the Beaumont Drillers last week at home. Monroe's first win should be just around the corner. But a Drillers loss would have been greatly appreciated by the Copperheads.

One of the reasons you witnessed the 86-14 bombing of the Thunder was because if Beaumont and Katy tie at the end of the season, the team with the most points will be the higher seed for the playoffs.

Espirit giving out winning spirit

Defensive Coordinator Troy Espirit has the defense firing on all cylinders the last few games. The squad led by Kailan Williams and Greg Yeldell have bonded this defense, they do not look like the same defense that played the first four weeks of the season.

They have not been beat often deep lately and Sammy Knight has shut down the outside and they may be peaking at the right time heading toward the last two months of the season. They are putting much more pressure on the opposing quarterbacks and they are starting to feel like the defense with bite.

The winners are . . .

Congratulations to Ryan Beuke for receiving the Tailgater of the Game along with winners Carrie Halliday as Queen Copperhead and as Morris Flett received King Copperhead honors. Kid Copperhead went to the super Copperhead fan of Gary Lynn.

With two touchdown receptions this last week, Wide Receiver John Whitehead of Southern Mississippi received the MVP award from copperheadfans.com. Special thanks to all that contributed to the MVP award this week and your emails of team support.

Your support is very appreciated by the team players.

C-heads in the community

Kudos goes to Marc Saldana and Jason Deml for their participation in the Texas Christian Reading Program last Friday. In honor of their hard work this year, and to commemorate the Copperheads victory over Montgomery, Saldana and Deml made the visit over to Texas Christian School in West Houston to congratulate the kids in person.

Teacher Amy Bear was glad they came, "It was really exciting. I'm a really, really big football fan, and I am glad they came to see us. For the players to visit us at our school is very cool. They were so quiet and attentive to the players."

Herc Palmquist, the administrator of Texas Christian School and a self-proclaimed football fan, was hopeful that his beloved Copperheads would rise to victory this week and go on to the Indoor Bowl. Palmquist said, "I learned that when I pick out a learning incentive that the kids can relate to, it really motivates them. And they love football! This visit from the Copperheads is really very special for them."

On a personal level

I really hate to see the Copperheads hit the road the last few games have been a blast and the word is getting out about the Copperheads. The last few games will be exciting with the playoffs quickly approaching.

It's not too late to jump on the bandwagon and join the fun. The tailgating crowds are growing and so is attendance at the games. The future looks brighter each day for the Katy Copperheads.
