Texas Copperheads News Release
(KATY, TX. - April 24, 2006,) - The entire Katy Copperheads organization is committed to the betterment of the lives of those, especially young people and families, who live in the Houston and Katy areas. Since the team's inception in 2005, the Copperheads have began a legacy of community involvement in and around Katy, Texas. The Copperheads Community Relations Department works as a mechanism to create and implement efficient and effective programs that work toward the organizational goal of being a productive and contributing member of the community. The Copperheads are appreciative of the opportunity, through an alliance with our neighbors, to give back to a community that has given so much to us.
The game of indoor football invokes passion and emotion unlike any other sport. On Friday, Katy Copperheads quarterback Marc Saldana and wide receiver Jason Deml visited Texas Christian School in Houston, where football season is a time for students to take their passion for indoor football and apply it to reading.
In honor of their hard work this year, and to commemorate the Copperheads victory over Montgomery, Saldana and Deml made the visit over to Houston to congratulate the kids in person. With the classroom packed, Marc and Jason spoke to the students about the importance of reading and encouraged them to find pleasure in reading by identifying books on topics that they are interested in. "When I was young, I didn't always enjoy reading," said Saldana. "But that was because I didn't realize all the opportunities to read about the things that interested me, like sports and football. That's when I realized how great the newspaper was, and I began to enjoy reading the sports section every morning. I encourage all of you to think about what you want to know more about, because there is always plenty to learn by reading."
"It was great to come out today," said Saldana. "The school did a great job putting this reading program together and I'm glad to have the opportunity to encourage them to stick with it."
Teacher Amy Bear was glad they came, "It was really exciting. I'm a really, really big football fan, and I am glad they came to see us. For the players to visit us at our school is very cool. They were so quiet and attentive to the players."
Herc Palmquist, the administrator of Texas Christian School and a self-proclaimed football fan, was hopeful that his beloved Copperheads would rise to victory this week and go on to the Indoor Bowl. Palmquist said, "I learned that when I pick out a learning incentive that the kids can relate to, it really motivates them. And they love football! This visit from the Copperheads is really very special for them."
The Katy Copperheads will play a 14 game schedule in 2006 consisting of seven home and seven away games. The remaining home games will be played in the Leonard E. Merrell Center on the following dates:
- Sunday, April 30th, 2006 (Bozeman)
- Friday, June 9th, 2006 (Monroe)
- Saturday, June 24th, 2006 (West Palm Beach)
