Texas Copperheads News Release

KATY, TX. - May 16, 2006 - As the 2006 NIFL playoffs approaches, Katy prepares to increase its lead in the division and claim the title of Texas' Best NIFL Team. Indoor football's rivalry games are a season unto themselves.

Katy will travel to Beaumont on Saturday, May 20, 2006 for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff at the Ford Arena. The two teams have split the two previous games this season with the home team claiming victory each time. But now Katy is riding high on a three game winning streak where they have outscored their opponents by a whopping 196-46 margin. The Drillers are currently licking their wounds after a 65-12 loss at Montgomery which extended their losing streak to two games.

"I am extremely excited. Talk about instant rivalries, this is it," Bryan Blake, the Katy Copperheads Head Coach said. "One of the trademarks of the NIFL is close, regional rivalries, having Katy and Beaumont so close is going to be a real advantage for all the teams in the NIFL. We are thrilled to be in the Southeast Texas area and believe that indoor football will be a fan favorite for years to come. This game only sparks interest and makes playing it because of playoff implications even that more fun."

Katy-Beaumont also marks the first of many games of rivalry season. Rivalries and their traditional intensity are what separate Texas football from any other game. Other area sports has its historic battles, sure -- but the added urgency that comes from football teams only playing a few times a year makes football rivalries more exciting.

But we don't talk enough about why these rivalries are so intense. Aside from the fact that hating the other team feels nearly as good as loving your own, each rivalry has a snowflake-ish singularity.

It's always something else to play for, other than what really counts," he said. "We just want to win some ballgames right now. But when you develop a rivalry in that sense, I guess maybe you can go out there with a little more intensity."

Seats are still available for the Copperheads next home game on June 9, 2006 versus the Twin-City (Monroe) Gators. For ticket information visit www.katyprofootball.com or www.ticketmaster.com.
