Texas Copperheads News Release
Each week txcopperheads.com talks with Head Coach Ollie Guidry about everything Copperheads. If you have a question for Coach Guidry, email it to cronquillo@texascopperheads.com. Next week, Coach Guidry might answer your question!
This week Coach Guidry addresses the week 16 home loss to Central and looks forward to this week's opponent, Corpus Christi.
On the loss to Central Valley: "It was a tough loss for our football team. We had some challenges in practice and had to make some adjustments to our roster on the defensive side of the ball. We had two or three guys banged up. Not playing Micah, Armar not playing at 100% and to have a couple of other injuries out there, it was kind of indicative to that out come that we had this past Saturday night."
On the Copperheads defensive struggles against Central Valley: "We had a couple of new guys playing the defensive line position. We've been talking about this all year...to be able to have success in this league or whatever league there is, you have to be able to put pressure on the QB. We didn't put enough pressure on the QB."
On the Copperheads offense performance against Central Valley: "We are who we are, and we are not a high scoring team. Our success is based on the offense managing the game, controlling the ball and scoring when opportunities present itself...and being successful in the red zone...and having the defense keep down the points with our opponents. Unfortunately, the combination didn't work out well for us."
On QB Stephen Wasil's performance against Central Valley: "Stephen managed the game. He made some good throws and he made some bad throws. Steve is a guy...we know what to expect from Steve on any given day and he's going to get in there and do what he's supposed to do...lead and guide our offense. We felt like Steve did a decent job in our game last week and we expect Steve to get better."
On the need to improve the talent level of the team: "We need to get better in 5 areas. Five different players makes a big difference. You're talking about some veteran players on the offensive side of the ball...some playmakers on the defensive side of the ball...a better pass rush...and there's a major difference. You can't take a mule to the Kentucky Derby. You have to have your horses ready to go but we don't have all those horses right now."
On the week 17 game at Corpus Christi: "They're a solid football team. They're coming off of a tough loss to Rio Grande Valley this past week. It will be somewhat of a short week for those guys but Coach Trigg will have those guys ready to play. They're still fighting for a (playoff) spot. They're in good position right now; they're just a couple of games behind. We know what to expect as far as where they're at. We just have to go out there and play a good 4 quarters of football on offense, defense and special teams and compete for 60 minutes."
On how quickly the season has passed: "Through the ups and downs, it's been fun. Working with these guys...trying to get these guys to be better football players...and better people on and off the football field has been a great challenge for our coaches and players we've had come through this system."
