Albany Firebirds News Release
(ALBANY, NY) â Albany OL/DL Spencer Conley has been named ADT Defensive Player of the Week by the af2 league office for his Week 9 performance during the Conquest's 56-47 victory over the Birmingham Steeldogs.
Conley, who is the af2 record holder for sacks in a single game (4.5/2001 vs. Greensboro), moved back into a tie for the af2 league lead recording his fifth sack of the season against the Steeldogs last Friday night. He also picked up 3.5 tackles (including 1.5 for loss), while forcing and recovering a critical Birmingham fumble in the second quarter.
Conley is playing in his third af2 season, and coincidentally his third af2 city. His career began in Norfolk, VA in 2001, when he set the record and finished with 6.5 sacks through just eight games. In 2002 he saw action with the Cape Fear Wildcats, playing in two playoff games, before being re-assigned during training camp this season and making his way to Albany. Through seven games this season, Spencer is tied for the league lead in sacks (5.0) and Tackles for Loss (5.0), and ranks tied for 2nd with (2) Two forced fumbles.
Conley, a native of San Antonio, Texas, has also taken his football career to the big screen during his career. He can be seen in films such as The Replacements, Any Given Sunday and Remember the Titans, along with several other professional and arena football notables.
Conley is the third member of the Conquest to be name the ADT Defensive Player of the Week by af2 during the 2003 season. DS's Elijah Beamon and John Stuart have also garnered the honor, making Albany the first team in af2 history to have three players win the prestigious ADT award during the same season.
The Conquest will take on the Rochester Brigade this Saturday, May 31st at the Pepsi Arena, in the second installment of the 2003 I-90 NY Lottery Cup. Albany defeated the Brigade, 52-38, on May 17th in Rochester. If the Conquest should be fortunate enough to win this weekend's game they will retain the NY Lottery Cup for the second straight season. Kickoff is at 7:30 PM and tickets can be purchased at the Pepsi Arena box office or any Ticketmaster location.
