Plymouth Whalers News Release
PLYMOUTH - Although the Ontario Hockey League's Plymouth Whalers play on the road for games Thursday in Windsor and Friday in Sault Ste. Marie, the Whalers' home venue - Compuware Arena - will be busy throughout the end of the week and into Saturday.
Compuware Arena is also the home of the Michigan High School Hockey Boys Semifinals and Finals. This year's Semifinals run on Thursday with games at 5:30pm and 8pm and continue Friday at noon, 2:30pm, 6pm and 8:30pm.
Finals run on Championship Saturday, with Division 2 at 11am, Division 3 at 3pm and Division 1 and 7pm.
Prices are $6 for the Semifinals on Thursday and Friday. Tickets for Championship Saturday run $7. All-Tournament passes can be purchased for $25. All tickets can be purchased on game days on a cash basis.
The MHSAA Boys Hockey Semifinals and Finals moved to Compuware Arena in 2003 and the venue offers excellent value within a convenient driving distance for many high school teams involved.
"We enjoy hosting the tournament," said Compuware Arena manager Mike Henry. "There's a definite buzz in the building for three days. If local teams are still playing, we expect enthusiastic crowds all during the tournament."
Indeed, last year's Division 1 Final between Detroit-Novi Catholic Central and Howell drew a sellout crowd of over 3,800 fans.
Local high school teams still alive in Quarterfinal games in the tournament include Division 1 schools Howell, Utica Eisenhower, Detroit U-D Jesuit, Orchard Lake St. Mary's, Detroit-Novi Catholic Central and Ann Arbor Huron; Division 2 schools Trenton, Novi, Saline, Warren DeLaSalle and Rochester Hills Stoney Creek; and Division 3 schools Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood and Riverview Gabriel Richard.
Quarterfinals run Tuesday and Wednesday throughout the state.
The Compuware Arena ice won't be quiet for long following Championship Saturday. The Plymouth Whalers return to action Sunday at 2pm, hosting Saginaw in the regular season finale. Fans can Skate with the Whalers following Sunday's matinee.
