January 7, 2012 - Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL)
Kansas City Comets News Release
(Park City, KS) In tonight's marquee matchup between the Comets and the Wichita Wings the fans were once again treated to an exciting game that came down to the final moments. The Comets walk away with the 13-10 victory and claim the first ever Turnpike Tropy. Geison led the way with 2 goals and 4 points. Wichita's Frederico Moojen had a hat trick for the Wings, but it wasn't enough as the Comets improve to 9-7 in the league.
The Comets, fresh off a disappointing loss to the Milwaukee Wave last night, started the game on fire. Coach Roentved installed a high-pressure offense that kept Wichita's Sanaldo on his toes and chasing shots all throughout the quarter. Defender Brian Harris found himself all alone at the top of the box two minutes into the game and buried a 3 point goal for the early 3 pt lead. Despite controlling play for the remainder of the quarter, the Comets were unable to score again in the quarter.
The second quarter was the busiest of the net for both goalkeepers. The Wings seemingly found the key to beating the full-field pressure scheme and Tijani Ayegbusi, Frederico Moojen and Alargie Jobe found the net. Neto and Byron Alvarez were able to keep the Comets ahead. Alvarez's score coming on a power play. At the end of the half the Comets held onto the lead 7-6.
In the 2nd half it was quite apparent that these two teams took great pleasure in beating each other as every loose ball produced a heated battle and every shot was taken with intensity. The teams went back and forth and Moojen was able to find himself in the right spot at the right time to give the Wings their first lead of the night as the quarter ended with the Comets down 8-7.
As we have seen before, the Comets will never give up in the 4th quarter of any game. Despite flying in from Milwaukee very early this morning, the team pushed, battled and once again controlled the majority of play. Geison and Moojen traded goals for the teams as the clock wound down and the Wings still led 10-9. On a set play from the top of the arc Tiguinho showed why the team signed him midseason. He bent his shot around the wall straight into the goal. It hit the back of the net seemingly before Sanaldo knew it was even shot. Geison added an insurance goal 2 minutes later and the Comets were able to hold on for the win.
The victory gives the Comets a 9-7 record and a 3 game lead on the Wings for the final playoff spot in the Central Division. These two teams will face each other this coming Saturday January 14th at Sprint Center in Downtown Kansas City for the 2nd Annual Retro Game. Tickets are still available by visiting Ticketmaster or calling (816) 478-BALL.
