Wichita Wings News Release
WICHITA, Kan. - The Wichita Wings of the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) lost a crucial game against the Missouri Comets. Playing at Hartman Arena in front of 4,000 fans, the Wings fell to the Comet with a final score of 13-10.
Missouri struck blood early in the first quarter, scoring an unassisted 3 point goal by Defender Brian Harris. A tough fought first quarter ended in no further points with Missouri up 3-0 going into the second quarter.
Tijani Ayegbusi was the first Wings to score with a goal coming early in the second. Ayebusi's unassisted 2 pointer kick-started the game, setting off two more quick scores by Missouri Forward Neto (assisted by Vahid Assadpour), and Wings Forward Freddy Moojen (assisted by Chris Lemons). The Moojen goal struck life into Wichita, putting the Wings down by only one. Missouri once again responded quickly with an unassisted power play goal by Forward Bryon Alvarez, putting the Comets up 7-4. With 5:22 left to play in the half, Wings Forward Alargie Jobe hammed a rocket past Wings Goalkeeper Danny Waltman to put the Wings back within 1 point. Going into the half, Missouri lead 7-6.
The third quarter appeared to be heading towards a shutout on both sides until Wings Forward Freddy Moojen scored a big time goal (assisted by Tijani Ayegbusi) to put Wichita in the lead for the first time in the game. Going into the fourth, Wichita narrowly lead the Comets 8-7.
Wichita didn't hold the lead long, just 37 seconds into the fourth Comets Midfielder Geison slid an unassisted goal past Wings Goalkeeper Sanaldo Carvalho to regain the lead for Missouri. The game continued its delicate balancing act when Freddy Moojen scored a big time unassisted goal to re-gain the lead for the Wings at 10-9. It appeared as though Wichita would hold onto the lead for the rest of the game, but once again Missouri struck back. An unassisted Tiguinho goal put Missouri back on top.
Down by one point, a Wings two minute tripping penalty on Midfielder Jamar Beasley at the 3:33 mark put the Wings down by one man. However the Wings found themselves in an even tougher spot after a second tripping penalty was called on Forward Edvin Worley less than 90 seconds later. Down two men, Missouri took advantage quickly with an unassisted goal by Geison on the power play to put the Comets up 13-10.
With just over 1:30 left in game play, The Wings made several last ditch efforts to tie the game, however the dual penalties late in the fourth proved to be too much. Missouri took the game with a final score of 13-10.
Post game, Wings Head Coach LeBaron Hollimon spoke about the game. "It was another classic Wings-Comets rivalry. Once again it came down to a coin-flip toss to determine the game. I give all the credit in the world to Missouri, they showed up and played for the win. There is no doubt this rivalry is quickly becoming the best in the MISL." Wichita will take on the Comets one final time in regular season play when they travel to Kansas City on January 14- that game being played out of the Sprint Event Center. The Wings will then return home to Hartman Arena on January 20 when they host the Milwaukee Wave.
