Comets Visit Ambush with Road Support

February 3, 2024 - Major Arena Soccer League (MASL)
Kansas City Comets News Release

The Kansas City Comets and St. Louis Ambush will play their fourth I-70 Series matchup this season when they meet Sunday in St. Charles. Several hundred are set to make the trip and support the Comets on the road.

The Comets are battling a six-game losing streak, including their most recent loss Friday night against the Baltimore Blast 7-5. They nearly overcame a four-goal deficit but couldn't get the equalizing goal.

The Comets sit fourth in the Eastern Conference standings with Friday being the last of a six-game road swing, where they haven't taken a point. The Comets' last win came on January 6 against the Harrisburg Heat.

Michael Lenis (right ankle sprain) will be out while Zach Reget (illness) is questionable and Lalo Alonso (right thigh strain) is probable. Both Reget and Alonso played against Baltimore as Reget returned to the scoresheet. Rian Marques is also scheduled to serve a one-game suspension for his red card against Baltimore.

Reget leads the conference with 22 goals and will be available before heading off to Argentina to join the U.S. Futsal National Team for camp until his return on February 15. John Sosa has 14 assists, tied for most in the East with Monterrey's Genaro Castillo.

The Comets are 3-0 against STL this season, winning twice at home and once at The Family Arena. The Family Arena has caused some chaotic matches recently, with all three I-70 matchups last season going to overtime while the Comets barely escaped an overtime decision on New Year's Eve.

The Ambush (3-8-3) are looking to string together multiple wins for the first time this season and put themselves into the playoff race. STL is coming from a 10-3 thumping of the Harrisburg Heat.

They recently acquired defender Raphael Araujo in a trade with Baltimore. In his Ambush debut on Friday, Araujo scored a third-quarter hat trick.

The Ambush have had hope on home turf, where they are 3-4-1 while winless in six road games.

The trio of Mike Da-Silva (ankle), Sam Guernsey (ankle) and Will Eskay (ankle) are all listed as probable for the Ambush. Guernsey was held out of Friday's contest while Eskay scored twice and Da-Silva scored once.

Eskay is STL's leading scorer with 20 points and 16 goals. Robert Kristo and Lucas Almeida trail behind, combining for 31 points.

The Ambush are commanded in the back by goalkeeper Paulo Nascimento, who is second in the MASL with 159 saves. Marcel Berry and Curtis Kurby have also caused some havoc defensively, combining for 29 blocks.

Following Sunday's contest, the Comets return home for a three-game homestand beginning with a back-to-back against the Tacoma Stars (Friday, Feb.9) and Empire Strykers (Saturday, Feb. 10). Tickets are available for at www.kccomets.com/tickets.
