Houston Comets News Release

HOUSTON – The Houston Comets tip off the 2004 regular season on Thursday, May 20 at Toyota Center with a 7:30 p.m. contest versus the San Antonio Silver Stars. The game was announced today by the WNBA as part of the 2004 league schedule. In addition, the Comets will be on five nationally televised games, with two contests on ABC, two on ESPN2 and one on Oxygen.

The WNBA will showcase 13 teams in 2004, while continuing the 34-game schedule (17 home and 17 away). Overall, Houston will play each Western Conference opponent three or four times and face each Eastern Conference opponent two times.

Houston's 17-game home slate will include four nationally televised games, including an ABC broadcast for the first of two home battles with the Los Angeles Sparks on June 5. The team's second ABC game will come against Tamika Catchings and the Indiana Fever on July 31. The Comets will also be featured twice at home on ESPN2, hosting the defending WNBA Champion Detroit Shock on July 15 and the Sacramento Monarchs on Sept. 16.

Other highlights of Houston's home schedule include a meeting with the New York Liberty on June 3 and a second visit by the Sparks on July 10. Lauren Jackson, Sue Bird and the Seattle Storm are also scheduled to make a pair of visits to Toyota Center on June 18 and July 27.

In order to accommodate the approximately 30 WNBA players expected to represent their countries at the 2004 Olympic Games being held August 13-28 in Athens, Greece, the WNBA has lengthened the 2004 season by four weeks and will not play regular season games from August 2-31. Players not representing their countries during the Olympics will participate in a variety of activities that celebrate the sport of women's basketball, taking part in community outreach initiatives such as "WNBA Mind. Body. Spirit.," "Read to Achieve," and "Jr. WNBA." Various teams will also run basketball camps and host viewing parties throughout the Olympic Games.

The 2004 regular season ends on Sunday, September 19, with the playoffs scheduled to begin on Friday, September 24. The WNBA Finals will begin on Friday, October 8.

Season and group tickets for the 2004 Houston Comets are available, starting at just $8.00 a game, by going on-line at www.houstoncomets.com or by calling (713) 627-WNBA. Individual game tickets will go on sale at a later date.
