Charlotte Sting Announce 2004 Schedule
January 21, 2004 - Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA)
Charlotte Sting News Release
January 21, 2004 â The WNBA released the 2004 schedule today, and the Charlotte Sting will look to advance to the playoffs for the seventh time in eight seasons beginning on Friday, May 21 at 7 p.m. as they host the four-time champion Houston Comets at Charlotte Coliseum.
The eighth WNBA season will tip-off on Thursday, May 20 with three Western Conference match-ups.
Charlotte will play three of four games at home before facing a four-game road stretch that is highlighted by contests against Lisa Leslie's Los Angeles Sparks and the Phoenix Mercury, who hold the top pick in this Spring's WNBA Draft. The Sting will play 19 of 34 games on weekends, with eight of those dates slated for the friendly confines of Charlotte Coliseum.
The Sting's home schedule features the Sparks on Sunday, June 20 at 6 p.m., the Mercury on Thursday, July 1 at 7 p.m., and Sue Bird's Seattle Storm on Thursday, July 8 at 7 p.m. After going 4-0 against the Detroit Shock last season, the Sting will host the defending champions on Wednesday, June 23 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, September 4 at 6 p.m.
The Sting will play one nationally televised game in the regular season finale at Detroit on Sunday, September 19 at 2 p.m. The local television/radio schedule will be announced at a later date.
In order to accommodate the approximately 30 WNBA players expected to represent their countries at the 2004 Olympic Games from August 13-28 in Athens, Greece, the WNBA has lengthened this summer's schedule by four weeks and will not play regular season games from August 2 to August 31. Sting point guard Dawn Staley was previously named to the USA Basketball Women's Senior National Team and will compete in her third Olympics this summer. WNBA players not representing their countries will participate in a variety of activities such as basketball clinics, community appearances and Olympic viewing parties.
