Kansas City Comets News Release
INDEPENDENCE, MISSOURI - The Comets got six goals and an MISL-season high 13 points from Byron Alvarez and routed the Milwaukee Wave 21-6 Sunday afternoon at Independence Events Center. The team scored 21 of the last 23 points in the game. Boris Pardo made his first appearance of the season in goal for the Comets and played brilliantly, finishing with 17 saves. The Comets closed the regular season with a record of 15-9 while Milwaukee heads into the playoffs at 18-6.
Milwaukee scored the first two goals of the match to jump out to a 4-0 lead on shots from Giuliano Oliveiro and Jonathan Greenfield midway through the first quarter. The Comets stormed back to tie late in the period with two power play goals from Alvarez, both on feeds from Geison. The Comets finished the game four of five on power play opportunities with all four goals scored by Alvarez, assisted by Geison.
The Comets scored the only goal of the second quarter as Stefan Stokic got his third of the year on a long pass from Pardo. The squad led Milwaukee at the half for the second straight game, this time by a slim 6-4 margin.
Unlike Friday night when a 10-2 halftime lead over the Wave slipped away, the Comets came out of the locker room on fire, scoring three goals in the first five minutes. Geison to Alvarez accounted for two more power play goals in the scoring burst, sandwiched around a Geison goal of his own.
Milwaukee finally stopped the 12-0 scoring run with Oliveiro's second goal of the day but the Comets ensured there would be no rally Sunday by scoring the final nine points to win going away. Neto answered the Milwaukee goal four minutes later on a feed from Bato. Neto added a second goal early in the fourth quarter and now has 17 for the year.
Alvarez also scored two goals down the stretch, including a three-pointer that was intended as a crossing pass but deflected off a Wave player into the net. A rebound off a hard Brian Harris shot was an easy finish for Alvarez eight minutes into the quarter to close the scoring.
"The team effort was important after what happened Friday night and it was great tonight," Comets Coach Kim Roentved said. "We scored on most of the chances we had. We got a little bit of the respect back that we earned over the last six weeks."
The 13 points for Alvarez was the most scored by a player in a single game in the MISL this year. He finished the regular season with 78 points, likely to be the third-best total in the league this year.
"His points come in bunches," Roentved said of Alvarez. "He's still an MVP for me. We won't be able to win a championship without him. He had a fantastic game today. Very few players can go out and score six goals in a game."
Geison had six points on the day on a goal and four assists, all to Alvarez. He finishes the regular season with 90 points and is almost certainly the MISL's 2011-12 scoring champ.
Roentved also raved about the play of Pardo.
"We know we can put Boris in there at anytime and not have to worry about it which is just an extra plus for the team," he said. "The fact he went in there today and had a great game is just fantastic."
The Central Division Finals will also match-up Milwaukee and the Comets. The Comets will host Game 1 of the series at the Independence Events Center Friday, March 9 at 7:35pm. Game 2 is scheduled for Sunday, March 11 in Milwaukee. If necessary, a 15-minute mini-game would immediately follow Game 2 to decide the representative in the MISL Championship Series.
