December 29, 2011 - Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL)
Kansas City Comets News Release

(Independence, MO) For a game that boasts such high scoring intense action, the goalkeepers came to play tonight. The Comets and Wings combined for over 60 shots on goal. Wichita's Sanaldo turned away 43 shots on goal, but he was unable to stop them all as the Comets come away with the 10-7 win. This game featured all the intensity you would expect from this rivalry that has spanned multiple decades. Byron Alvarez led the team with 5 points, including the first two goals for the Comets. Victor Quiroz led things for the Wichita Wings with 4 points.

The first quarter featured physical play typical of two teams battling for position as we transition into the 2nd half of the season. 9 fouls were called in the quarter, but only one of those resulted in a two-minute penalty. Victor Quiroz of Wichita was caught for boarding and Byron Alvarez took advantage of the man-up opportunity for the first goal of the night. In true Alvarez style he celebrated by finding his daughters in the crowd and giving them a kiss.even though ther were several rows up from the floor. Quiroz made up for his mistake a couple minutes later though by tying the game, then former Comet Jamie Harding hit a 3 ptr to put the Wings up 5-2 towards the end of the quarter. The two teams would battle through the rest of the first quarter and the second, but neither could sustain a possession long enough to get solid chances on net.

After a spirited Media Game between personalities from local TV, Radio, Newspaper and Internet blogs at halftime, the crowd was ready for some more exciting MISL action. The Wings' Quiroz started the 2nd half scoring with a power play goal 6 minutes into the half. It was his 2nd goal of the night, but it would be the last time the Wings would get any points on the night. Down 7-2 the Comets pressured the Wings defense relentlessly forcing Bryan Perez into a tripping foul. Byron Alvarez scored his 2nd power play goal of the night and the comeback was officially on.

The Comet offense peppered the Wings goalkeeper Sanaldo with 18 second half shots. Geison scored to bring the Comets within one only 45 seconds into the 4th quarter. That goal gave Geison a 10 game point scoring streak, the longest in the league this season. It seemed like that might be the closest the team could get as Wichita's Sanaldo made some outstanding saves. Vahid Assadpour was finally able to solve the mystery of the Wings goalkeeper 10 minutes into the quarter as he notched the eventual game winner. Tiguinho added an insurance goal on the sixth attacker a few minutes later. Nearly 4,200 fans were treated to an exciting 10-7 Comets win. The win gives the Comets a 3-0 lead in the newly established I-35 series, but more importantly it gives them a 3.5 game lead on Wichita and only 2.5 back from Milwaukee in the division.

These two teams will battle it out again on Friday night in Wichita's Hartman Arena. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:35pm. As always, fans are encouraged to watch at the Official Watch Party location, BrewTop Pub in Lee's Summit. The next home game for the Comets is the annual Retro Game, this year played at Sprint Center in downtown Kansas City. The Comets will wear jerseys inspired by Comets teams of the 1980's. At halftime legends from former Comets teams will play an exhibition against legends from the other storied MISL franchises.
