Comets Make a Statement with Rout of Syracuse

January 25, 2012 - Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL)
Kansas City Comets News Release

(Independence, MO) All week long Comets players and coaches have talked about the importance of each game the rest of the season. Every game had to be played with an expectation of winning. That attitude and intensity was on full display tonight. The Comets scored 57 seconds into the game and didn't let up all night. Three players had hat tricks and Tiguinho had a game high 9 points as the Comets dominated the Silver Knights 33-12.

It was clear from the opening gun that the Comets had come to make a statement about their place in the league. In only their second year, the players on this team feel they deserve to be thought of among the league's elite. Leo Gibson proved the point by intercepting a Syracuse defensive clearance and hitting a rocket from outside the arc for an early 3-0 lead. The Silver Knights' Daniel Stevens put them on the board 4 minutes later to make the score 3-2, but that was the closest the Knights would get all night. Vahid Assadpour, Bato Radoncic, Byron Alvarez and Tiguinho piled in goals for a 1st quarter 11-2 lead.

The Comets seemed to pull their foot off the pedal a little in the 2nd period and played a more possession based game. Each team scored two goals in the quarter with Geison netting one and Brian Harris netting the other. Harris scoring his goal by sneaking behind the Syracuse defense after serving a two minute penalty. At half the Comets had the game seemingly well in hand 15-6.

In the second half the Comets came out full throttle once again. Assadpour scored 5 minutes into the third quarter and Byron Alvarez sandwiched two goals in between two more from league leader Geison. Nelson Santana was able to score for Syracuse, but at the end of the quarter the Comets led 25-8.

The fourth quarter was not much kinder to the Knights. Assadpour finished off his hat trick, joining Geison and Byron Alvarez for the night. Geison added his fourth of the night, before Tiguinho and Brian Harris put in their second goals of the game. Final score, Comets 33 - Silver Knights 12.

Many records were set tonight. This was the highest scoring output in the league by one team and the highest in Comets franchise history (33 points), the highest cumulative point total in the league this season (45 points), and the largest point differential of the season with the Comets winning by 21 points. This was also the first time in team history to have three players with 3 or more goals.

The Comets, currently on a two game winning streak, hope to continue this momentum on February 10th in the annual Pink Game against the Baltimore Blast. Once again the team will be wearing pink jerseys to be auctioned off immediately following the game, this year benefitting the Ali Kemp Educational Foundation. Kickoff is at 7:35pm and tickets can be found online at ticketmaster.com. For more information about the Ali Kemp Educational Foundation visit takedefense.org.
