Kansas City Comets News Release
The Kansas City Comets (4-0) kick-off a stretch of four road games Friday at Milwaukee (0-2-1) for the Wave's annual New Years Eve game, and to close out the early-season home-and-home series with their Central Division rival. The Comets took the first game of the series on Wednesday with a decisive 10-4 win at Cable Dahmer Arena.
The Comets win on Wednesday was just the third in the past 17 games with Milwaukee. All-time, the Wave hold a 15-9 series advantage and are 8-3 at home against Kansas City. This will be Milwaukee's long-awaited home opener following a postponement of their original 2021-22 opener vs Baltimore, and a 2021 season in which the Wave sat out due to issues surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Comets are led offensively by Leo Gibson's 14 points (8G-6A), which is also tops in the MASL. Several Comets have been off to great starts through four games including John Sosa (5G-3A), Kevin Ellis (6G-1A), and Ray Lee (2G-3A). Ellis had a hat-trick in Wednesday's game for the Comets.
Nicolau Neto is 4-0 in goal for Kansas City and brings a 4.50 goals-against-average and .757 save percentage to the game. With their star keeper, Josh Lemos sidelined, Neto's counterpart on the Wave, Matt Perrella is 0-2-1 with a 7.43 GAA and .696 save percentage.
Though the team is off to a slow start, Milwaukee rosters three strong scorers in Ian Bennett (7G-0A), last season's MVP while on loan with Florida, Marcio Leite (0G-5A), and Luan Oliveira (2G-2A). Wave rookie Kyle Crain notched his first two career goals Wednesday night at Cable Dahmer Arena. Gordy Gurson, with 176 career MASL goals, also has a pair of markers for Milwaukee this season.
